Inspiring the Next Generation at ‘Give Construction a Try’

Hannah, Emily, and Jack had a fantastic time at Castleford College for the Give Construction a Try event, where local schools got hands-on experience with different industries in construction. We were there representing plant hire, showcasing the variety of careers available in the industry.

We kicked off with an introduction to Potter Plant Hire—how we started, how we’ve grown, and the range of roles that keep the business moving. Emily, Hannah, and Jack shared their journeys into the industry, highlighting that whether you prefer working indoors or outdoors, hands-on or behind a desk, stationed in one place or travelling, there’s something for everyone in plant hire.

Jack then gave an interactive demo with our Hitachi 3T excavator, letting students sit in the seat and get a feel for the controls while explaining how telematics, GPS systems, and safety features are shaping the future of machine operation.

We also talked about career progression—from the best machines to start on, how to gain experience, and how operators can move up to more specialist, high-precision work on major projects. Plus, we discussed earning potential, giving students an insight into the rewards of a career in the sector.

To finish, we put their knowledge to the test with a fun quiz, where students had to throw a football at the correct answer (A, B, or C) on our tipped dumper—because learning should be fun too! 🎯

A huge thank you to Castleford College for hosting such a brilliant event, and to all the students who got stuck in! 💪
